Writing Update + Passed a mark.

Another Tuesday is here. Another update is below with changes. Here we go!

What I wrote this last week:

  • Finished the last third of Chapter V.
  • Pitched my third and final Tomb Raider article to LTN. Needing help finalizing it.

It didn’t take long like I said last week. I didn’t want to make this chapter feel stretched out. Rather, it is most likely stuffed too much. Haha. Three specific moments hit one after another in a short time. I was thinking about how to do it carefully, then just went with what I could do. I mentioned in a Facebook post that it bridged right into Chapter VI. Well, yes and no. The chapters that make up Act II have them flow into one another. I have outlined Chapter V and VI as a couple of those. Now I am on to VI – pretty much halfway through this draft!

Everything from here to the already written battle scene, then the last chapter, is going to be hard. I’ve described writing the other chapters like that, I know. It’s all my own fault. Haha. Eh, whatever – it’s my first book.

On to a few changes:

  • No more sharing to Twitter. Using Reddit instead, along with Discord and Facebook.
  • Facebook page for updates, writing inspiration/memes, and posts from other writers online I talk to.
  • Snippets from Just as Human shared every other week.

I will keep the Twitter link to my profile on this website’s menu for networking. A social media content manager recommended to me last week that I give Reddit a shot. I realized, “That’s not something I thought of.” I already have an account. Another thing is I don’t want to give away too much of the book with the bits I post. Skipping it this week for every other week. I could even stop after a while. Just as long as you trust my progress. Lastly, numbering these updates is unnecessary now.

You will see these take place pretty soon.

Any other recommendations? Just leave a comment. On that note, that is all for this week!

Writing Update #21

It is time for the next update on all things prose.

My rhythm is coming back. It took not paying close attention to the war, as well as sorting current and upcoming ideas for the book. Even if I wanted to keep up with the fighting, there is lots of misinformation I am told. Typical of people in power, right? That brings me to what I paid attention to this past week.

What I wrote this week:

  • Some of the last third of Chapter V.
  • Edited my next Love Thy Nerd article.

Chapter V is coming right along! This part of it that Ellexis is in with her squad has action while investigating something. As I wrote, I knew that I needed to amp up the tension between her, her brother Nolan, and the coming chapter. It flows into more action in Chapter VI. More a combination of growing stress with her, action, and other plot threads. Come to realize that I might be stuffing too much into that chapter. If it comes to that, I will have to make more adjustments.

It ought to be done by next Friday at the latest. As for this next LTN article, I received edits from the editor last week. Worked on those concurrently with Just as Human. Without spoiling it, it is about large-budget videogames. Not sure when that one will be published. When it is, I will definitely share it!

Check out a few sentences from what I wrote in Ch. V. Thanks for reading!

The more she thought of it, the longer she got a weird look from the two guys, and she inadvertently stepped back. But she didn’t have the time to be introspective all day. It had to be some locked away anger, pent-up frustration that had brewed like magma, and just now caused surface cracks. Breaks from long-festering exhaustion finally showing from making choices someone wouldn’t like. An answer was there. Ellexis knew it. For all her pride with the service, and all the time she and her military family dealt with interplanetary conflicts, it was not often that she contemplated her reasoning. One decision that was made having future implications was an obvious thing to think about. At least for society as a whole. For her relationship with her brother, it didn’t hit her like this before. And it made her wonder what the soldiers who they took down thought. Whether or not they truly understood what their purpose was. A twang of regret rose within her. It disappeared the next moment.

Getting momentum back. Writing Update #20

Time for the twentieth update! Good number. Something about twos is comfortably symmetrical. Two books from the bookstore. Two pieces of candy. Two movies to choose from for a movie night.

Momentum for this recent week ground to a halt. Last week was a busy one. Contract job changes, errands, driving back and forth from a weekend family visit, not to mention the whole world watching two countries at war. Sad; lots of lives hurt and lots of drama. Ironically, a lot of fiction features these kinds of events, mine included. Trying to not be tone-deaf saying that and showing my story.

What I managed to write was an external shift in character in Just as Human Real First Draft Chapter V. The idea was in mind from my outline. I wanted to plant a seed earlier on for future character choice – the next step in character development for a certain protagonist. I thought to give it a try, get some tension rolling before the actual section’s tension came. I like it. Will it stay in the next draft is to be seen.

Below is what happens just after it. Each time I have shared these makes me think people won’t enjoy the book later – its all a rough draft with minor edits for show. “People are cringing” or “Maybe you should wait until its done” or “polish it more”. That is how its going to be, though, and I want to share some of that progress.

That’s that for this week!

She hadn’t realized she puffed out her chest as he walked past her. Not a hidden gesture though; Kai and Ailenga suddenly double-checked their weapons. After a moment they looked back up at her. Their eyes carried the gaze of surprise. “I need one of you to stand as a lookout.”
They exchanged looks. “Why not,” Kai said. But Ailenga took a step toward Ellexis. “I have the sniper rifle. Could use a break from his sarcasm,” she smiled.
Kai gave a whatever look. Ailenga laughed and patted his shoulder. “You’re fine, Kai.”
He acknowledged her humor. “I hope you have enough water.”
Indeed the weather was quite warm. Cloud cover didn’t seem to provide much shade; the entrance bunker would be the only nearest relief other than their ship. Attracting dust, it didn’t quite blend into the desert rock. At a distance and with dust and its angular design, a lockout can mistake it for something used by Sylas. Whether that turned out to be true Ellexis was not sure. She didn’t know if wetsuits were used or even if they had the right size. Be pretty funny if they did. But she’d find out after she walked with Kai to rejoin Nolan. Both had blaster rifles unclipped from magnetic holds on their backs. Ailenga followed behind soon over the bright orange rock with the sun bearing down.

Up to the Date #19

Matthew back here for another writing update!

Same old, same old is pretty much it. What was written:

  • 1/3rd through Chapter V.

To be more exact, it is the tail end of the one-third mark. Before each writing session this week, I brainstormed scenes I now knew had to be put down. I realized I had to bring plot events closer to proximity of each other or drop them to keep the focus on the story. Otherwise, my ambition would go out of control. All the ideas I imagined would be shoved in without regard to what mattered – what should make Ellexis and Nolan’s sister-brother soldier story fun and poignant. Honestly, it makes connecting future dots easier too.

I hope this next piece of fresh prose keeps you curious you as we end another Writing Update. Oh, before I do that, I want to say that as of last week, Just as Human Real First Draft became my longest story written. Previously, Shards of the Risen: A Tomb Raider Story was the benchmark. That’s a fanfiction novella set a month after 2015’s Rise of the Tomb Raider. From 35,816 words to 38,557 as of now.

They knew where to go, how to get there, and what was on the outside. What was on the inside Ellexis still couldn’t figure out. Her theory was a whole bunch of scientists under command by Sylas and Irenka – his wife she often forgot about – designing something that needed all these sorts of requirements. Water combined with different levels of gravity, in the upper atmosphere so close to space it could just about be called space, and… what is that? Something shining out of the great big football portion in the upright position. An aura was outlined inside of it on the holomap. That was the itch on her back.

Still, this whole place was unnoticed by her and any other soldier she knew. The most surprising thing was Axiom being a well-known planet – three times the size of earth – with three biomes, maybe more. Where the water appeared to be streaming out of was a desert area. This meant Sylas and Irenka had permits to build or to utilize existing facilities outside major cities. People allowing this was just confounding. Had a beef with earth or something.

Soon enough they might see they were on the wrong side.
